Medieval Stirrup Ring

The Medieval ring dates from between 1300 and 1400. It gets it name from the shape of the shoulders of the ring because of the resemblence to the top of a horse riding stirrup. The ring is gold and the blue stone is thought to be a sapphire. Rings like this were not unusual but would have belonged to either a clergyman or a wealthy person.

The ring was found by a local metal detector and is being held in the museum until it goes to the Treasure Trove department of The National Museums of Scotland.
